A film is or should be more like a music than like fiction. It should be progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what is behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

My dad used to draw these great cartoon figures. His dream was but he never achieved it, and it kind of broke my heart. I think part of my interest in art had to do with his yearning for something he could never have.
Do it like a painters used to. Study they old masters. Enrich your palette. Expand the canvas. There´s always so much more to learn.
I think you can study too much. I´ve seen it happen. Young people get immersed in the work of other directors and end up imitating them rather than finding their own identity. It is important to see the work of as many directors as possible, but you must not become self-conscious. You have to accept that your first attempts are going to be quite rough compared to the finished works of great masters.
Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows, Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable, originality is non-existent.
Success can be a nightmare. When you are identified always with a certain title, with a certain movie, especially with a certain sequence in that movie, it becomes a kind of a little nightmare.
If you have a strong vision, then you are able to throw it away for a better one.
